My name is Chris Winkler. I’m a lecturer in charge of Japanese politics on the Modern Japanese Studies Program at Hokkaido University. Prior to joining Hokudai, I was senior research fellow and head of the social science section at the German Institute for Japanese Studies (DIJ) in Tokyo. I have also been affiliated with Keio and Chuo University during my dissertation and post-doctoral research.
My main research interest is intellectual history and how it shapes policy formulation and politics of postwar Japan. While political science these days primarily concerns itself with institutional change, I’m interested in the influence of ideologies such as conservatism or neoliberalism on political elites and their policy decisions.
